Layered Art
Kids can explore colors, use their imagination, and practice fine motor skills with this layered art project. It is really cool because as you add on layers your scene comes to life!
It’s neat that as you layer the images you can tell a story! It’s a fun way to make story books come to life as well. So, without further ado, let’s make some layered art.

How To Make This Fun and Awesome Layered Art
Step 1
Use the permanent markers to draw pictures on the plastic lids or plates.
Craft Notes:
Think out a story and start there. What is the scene? Who is the person and what are they doing? What else is around the person?
Step 2
Repeat step 1 until you have the story created.
Step 3
We glued popsicle sticks to the bottom of our lids so we could tell a story.
Step 4
Hold up the base lid/plate and then add different plates to tell your story. We had a boy who had horses and unicorns. But the boy was the base plate.
Craft Notes:
You can also just stack them as well.
Ways To Make This Layered Art More Educational And Fun
Making fun stories is always fun, but you can make this layered art a little more educational by:
- You can use this layered art to make story books or movies come to life. Read your child a book or let them watch a movie and let them recreate their favorite scene.
- You can use it to also make a story book come to life. Maybe one with minimal pictures.
- Let your children make their siblings a story and then tell the story out loud to the family.
Our Experience With This Layered Art Project
We had so much fun with this art project. My kids all made their own stories and told us them with visuals. It was a lot of fun. My husband and I made stories… or recreated stories I should say, and was able to tell our kids short stories based on our own favorite stories.
It was a lot of fun and kind of taught kids about chain of events. And it helped them work on their speech skills, fine motor skills, and it’s just fun listening to the creative stories that only kids can come up with.
We loved it. And I hope your family has as much fun as mine did with this layered art project.
